Here's Why Candy Might Surprise You!
You know what's funny? Most people don't wake up one morning and decide they need a non-chocolate Advent calendar.
It usually starts much smaller than that. Maybe you've bought the same chocolate Advent calendar every Christmas for years, and you're ready to change things up. Maybe someone in your family has never really been a chocolate person. Or maybe you've found yourself scrolling through page after page of Advent calendars thinking, There has to be something different this year.
If that's what brought you here, you're asking one of the questions we hear every Christmas at The Sugar Cube.
What's the best Advent calendar that isn't chocolate?
The honest answer is that there are some really great options now!
I genuinely love how creative Advent calendars have become. You can find calendars filled with coffee, tea, books, skincare, hot sauce, fishing gear and just about anything else you can imagine. Every year our team ends up having a few different Advent calendars around the warehouse. We love supporting other Canadian businesses, discovering products we'd never have found on our own, and seeing how other people create excitement around the countdown to Christmas.
But after spending years talking about Advent calendars, both as a customer and now as part of The Sugar Cube team, I've noticed something.
People are actually looking for a replacement for chocolate, not because they're necessarily looking for something that feels different; rather, they're looking for something that surprises them. That's where I think candy gets underestimated.
A lot of people assume that because it's "just candy," every day will feel the same. The funny thing is, I've always found the opposite to be true. Candy already comes with so much built-in variety. One morning might be something fruity and chewy, the next might be so sour your mind suddenly clears, and a few days later you're introducing someone to a candy they've never seen before. Even the candies people forget existed that instantly transport someone back to being eight years old.
That's one of the things I love most about candy: it has this incredible way of starting conversations.
One of my favourite parts of Advent season is reading the emails or reviews that start coming in once people begin opening their calendars. I never really know what's going to land in my inbox, but I'm always so happy it did!
Instead, it's a parent telling me their kids refuse to open today's cube until they've watched my virtual unboxing because, in their minds, we're opening it together. It's someone packing their Advent calendar into a suitcase because they're escaping somewhere warm for a few weeks but don't want to miss a single day of the tradition. Or it's a family buying a second calendar for their son or daughter who's away at school for the holidays, just so they can still open the same day's candy together, even if they're hundreds of kilometres apart.
Those are the stories that stay with me.
People think they're writing to tell us about the candy. Still, most of the time they're actually telling us about the conversations they had around the kitchen table, the traditions they didn't realize they were creating, or the little moments of connection that somehow became the best part of their morning.
I don't think that's an accident. I think that's what a great Advent calendar is supposed to do.
It's supposed to give you one small reason to pause before the day gets busy. Sometimes that's a piece of candy. Sometimes it's a laugh over who guesses the flavour correctly first. Sometimes it's a text message to your child who's away at university, or a video watched together before school.
The candy is what brings everyone to the table. Everything else is what they remember. That wasn't always obvious to me, though...
In fact, one of the biggest lessons I've ever learned about Advent calendars came from a cheese calendar I bought for my husband many Christmases ago.
The Cheese Calendar That Accidentally Taught Me Something
Speaking of surprises...
One of the biggest things I've ever learned about Advent calendars actually had nothing to do with candy.
Several years ago, I bought my husband a cheese Advent calendar for Christmas because I thought I had absolutely nailed his gift. I mean, there are literally hundreds of cheeses in the world. I don't even know how many. Probably thousands if you ask someone who actually knows cheese. The point is, there are enough that I wasn't expecting to eat the same one every four days, or to despise the taste completely.
We were genuinely excited every morning to see what was behind the next little door. We'd guess what might be coming next, talk about our favourites, and by the end of the first week I was convinced that I had made a terrible mistake.
Then to make it worse, they started repeating.
At first I thought maybe I was remembering wrong, but nope...it was definitely the same cheese. Then it happened again. And again. By about the middle of December, I had genuinely started gaslighting myself into wondering if maybe I didn't even like cheese anymore. Which, looking back, is a ridiculous conclusion to come to when the real problem was that I was eating the same cheese over and over again, and I hated it.
The funny thing is, I still think it was a good Advent calendar in theory.
It just taught me something I wasn't expecting.
Looking back, it wasn't really the cheese that disappointed me, except for that one flavour. It was the predictability. Once I felt like I knew what tomorrow probably looked like, I wasn't nearly as excited to open the next door. That little spark of curiosity quietly disappeared, and without even realizing it, I'd stopped looking forward to it.
I think about that calendar more often than you'd expect. We reflect on it in laughter.
Not because it was bad, but because it completely changed the way I think about what makes an Advent calendar memorable. It isn't about making every single day bigger than the last or trying to cram the most expensive product into every compartment. It's about giving someone a reason to wonder what's waiting tomorrow.
That feeling is surprisingly hard to create.
Why We Keep Tweaking Our Advent Calendar Every Year
One of the things I've loved most since joining The Sugar Cube is seeing how much thought goes into enhancing our Advent calendar every single year. If you've ever compared one of our earlier calendars to today's version, you'll notice they aren't completely different. Still, you'll notice hundreds of little decisions that have slowly made the experience better.
Some changes are obvious.
Some are so small you'd probably never notice them unless someone pointed them out. Those are usually my favourite ones.
Over the years, we've talked about everything from the order the candies appear in to how the calendar opens to how people experience it once they get it home. Clear cubes vs solid cubes. We added our online unboxing experience because people wanted to feel like they were opening it with someone. We created the Sweets Scorecard because we realized families were already debating their favourites and thought it would be fun to keep track. We expanded our allergy-friendly options because everyone deserves to be part of the countdown. We included sticker designs created by a Canadian artist to change up the design every year. We created a fully customizable corporate version that even moved beyond the holiday months. Advent in the summer? Yes, please! We even made the decision to create twenty-five days instead of twenty-four because...well...why should Christmas Day miss out on the fun?
None of those ideas happened overnight. Most of them came from listening.
Customers tell us what worked. They tell us what surprised them. They tell us the little things they loved that we never would have thought to ask about. Then our team spends the next year asking ourselves one simple question.
How do we make this even more fun next Christmas?
I love that way of thinking because it means our Advent calendar is always evolving. Not because we're trying to reinvent it every year, but because we're trying to protect the feeling people told us they loved in the first place.
If You're Already Thinking About Christmas.
If you've made it this far, I'm guessing you're a planner.
You're my kind of people. Because I'm a procrastinator at heart, and I strive to be where you are right now!
The people who start thinking about Advent calendars long before the Christmas music starts are usually the ones who end up getting exactly the calendar they wanted.
Our Advent calendars aren't available just yet, but our Advent VIP List is where everything starts, and this is genuinely the best place to be!
It's where we share sneak peeks as this year's calendars come together, behind-the-scenes updates from the warehouse, launch dates, early access and the only VIP Pre Sale Discount offer we'll have this season. If you're curious about what's changing this year, or you don't want to miss out when they launch, it's the best place to be.
And who knows? Maybe this will be the year your family accidentally starts a tradition they never saw coming. If that happens, I really hope you'll tell me about it.
Those stories are still my favourite part.
